  11.   The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network
  12.   Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating
  13.   official policy, procedures and other information of concern to
  14.   management personnel at DDN facilities.  Back issues may be read
  15.   through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be
  16.   obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5]

  22. Subject:  Transition to T/20 Internet Routing Servers
  23.  
  24.  
  25.        IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ - Switchover to New DDN Routing
  26.      Servers and New Gateway Assignments for Subscribers
  27.  
  28. This message provides specific information regarding the upcoming
  29. switchover of Defense Data Network (DDN) routing servers from the
  30. Mailbridges, which are being de-installed from the MILNET, to a new
  31. hardware platform called the T/20.  This affects communication between
  32. MILNET and the Internet.  Request widest dissemination.
  33.  
  34. 1.  Since February 1993, DISA has been implementing the plan to replace
  35. the Mailbridges with the T/20s.  The replacement will be completed by
  36. June 1993.  This message provides the default gateway assignments for
  37. MILNET hosts and the routing server assignments for MILNET subscriber
  38. gateways.  It also provides, in paragraph 5, telephone numbers for
  39. assistance in configuring user gateways for CONUS and OCONUS users.
  40. Request MILNET subscriber gateways and hosts switch to the new
  41. assignments listed in this message during the week beginning 27 Apr
  42. 1993.
  43.  
  44. 2.  Currently, the default gateways are Cisco Internet Protocol Routers
  45. (IPRs) on the DISN-NT Pilot Network which provide the store-and-
  46. forward function between MILNET and the civilian internet.  The routing
  47. servers (Mailbridges & T/20s) on the MILNET provide dynamic routing
  48. information to subscriber gateways.  The following information is
  49. provided to explain the responsibilities of subscriber gateway
  50. administrators in this transition.
  51.  
  52. a.  Section 8 gives the assignment, by PSNs, of the two T/20s that the
  53. subscriber gateways should peer with to obtain dynamic routing
  54. information.  The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the recommended
  55. protocol.  Please refer to DDN Management Bulletin 116 for a more
  56. detailed description of BGP and of the need to switch to BGP from the
  57. External Gateway Protocol (EGP).  The T/20s will continue to provide
  58. EGP services to those subscribers that are not yet ready to switch to
  59. BGP.  To achieve optimal routing for traffic to/from the Internet, it
  60. is important for subscriber gateways to prefer routes from their
  61. primary routing server over their secondary routing server.  This
  62. capability exists on most routers.  Specifically, it is possible to
  63. prefer routes from one EGP/BGP neighbor over another EGP/BGP neighbor
  64. in both Cisco routers and devices using the gateD router software.  If
  65. you require assistance configuring your router to accomplish this
  66. preference, please contact the technical point of contact given in
  67. paragraph 5.
  68.  
  69. b.  Subscribers should be reminded that the deadline for converting to
  70. BGP is 1 October 1993.  Beyond that date, the provision of EGP service
  71. will not be guaranteed by DISA.  Users who want to test their
  72. capability to use BGP should contact the technical point of contact to
  73. perform a brief test prior to a permanent change to BGP.
  74.  
  75. c.  Section 9 gives the assignment, by PSNs, of the Cisco IPRs that
  76. MILNET subscriber hosts (not gateways) should use for default routing
  77. of Internet traffic.  This section also applies to subscriber gateways
  78. which are incapable of using or choose not to use the dynamic default
  79. route provided by the Internet routing servers.
  80.  
  81. d.  Sections 6 and 7 provide the mapping between the names and the IP
  82. addresses of the T/20 routing servers and the Cisco IPRs.
  83.  
  84. 3.  These assignments are based on topological grounds to optimize
  85. routing within the MILNET.  Compliance to these assignments is critical
  86. to ensure maintenance of the proper level of services.  Please keep in
  87. mind that geographical distances do not necessarily correspond to
  88. topological distances on the MILNET.  The MILNET topology will be
  89. changing as it downsizes.  The assignments listed below will be
  90. reviewed periodically to ensure that routing continues to be optimal.
  91. Although efforts will be made to minimize changes, significant
  92. topological changes may require changes to the assignments in the
  93. future.  As usual, any such changes will be announced in future DDN
  94. Management Bulletins and.  BBN will assess the topology changes
  95. quarterly.  The next re-assignment of routers and default gateways
  96. could occur as soon as late July 1993.
  97.  
  98. 4.  Users are requested to switch to their new assignments on
  99. 27 Apr 1993, and are expected to be fully switched by 30 Apr 1993.  The
  100. Mailbridges will still be available during this time period as a backup,
  101. but will be deactivated on the following dates:
